HMB (Hydroxy Methyl Butyrate) is ideal for those who want to increase muscle mass, strength and recovery. HMB stimulates muscle protein synthesis (anabolism) and inhibits muscle protein degradation (anti catabolism).
HMB is a metabolite of the branched chain amino acid leucine. Which means that HMB is naturally created within the human body when you consume high protein foods which contain the branched chain amino acid leucine. The body metabolises approximately 5% of your leucine consumption into making HMB and uses that HMB to preserve and build muscle mass.
By adding a HMB supplement to your diet you are effectively supporting your body to build and preserve muscle mass.

HMB works in a similar way to leucine in that it activates the anabolic signalling mTOR pathway which is responsible for muscle anabolism.
Anecodotally, many people have found that HMB works well whilst gaining muscle but works even better when dieting during calorie restriction to preserve muscle mass. More recent research is beginning to verify this (Chang et al, 2023)

Various studies have also shown the benefits of HMB are quite significant, especially as we get older. From around age 40, we average 0.8% muscle loss per year, so by 70 years of age you will lose approximately 25% of your muscle tissue. This accelerates to 1.5% per year in our 70's. HMB has been shown to help preserve muscle mass in older adults (Hongmei et al, 2015).
HMB has also been shown to help preserve muscle mass during long periods of inactivity i.e 10 days of bed rest where muscle wastage can occur (Deutz et al, 2013). This preservation of muscle mass can keep us healthy, independent, less prone to injuries and physically stronger.
HMB has also been shown to assist in increasing anaerobic peak power (Durkalec-Michalski et al, 2015), improving aerobic performance (Lamboley et al, 2007) and improving endurance performance and VO 2 max (Fernández-Landa et al, 2024)

Consume a minimum of 3g to a maximum of 6 per per day in divided doses in 200ml of water or added to a shake.
Best Results on workout days: Divide your daily dosage with 1-2g pre workout, 1-2g post workout and 1-2g before going to sleep.
Best Results on rest days: Divide your daily dosage with 1.5g with first meal of the day and 1.5g before going to sleep.
